Industrial UK Regions to Gain from Clean Energy Push
Industrial regions and port cities across the UK are poised for significant economic and employment growth as fresh investments are set to advance clean power development. The Prime Minister, attending COP30 in Brazil, announced a series of deals that support skilled job creation and reinforce the UK’s commitment to climate action and energy self-sufficiency.
Major Investments in Ports and Offshore Wind Infrastructure
A standout commitment of over £100 million has been made by JERA Nex bp and EnBW to Belfast Harbour. This move will support the development of the Mona and Morgan offshore wind farms, which are projected to generate energy for nearly 3 million homes annually once operational. With the potential to create more than 300 jobs, this investment has also encouraged Belfast Harbour to invest £90 million in a new deepwater berth, enhancing its capacity for future projects.
In East Anglia, a £15 million investment is being made to expand the Port of East Anglia’s operations and maintenance centre, forming part of a wider £28 million modernisation. ScottishPower and Peel Ports Group announced an additional £10 million for developing the port’s Northern Terminal, aimed at bolstering future offshore wind projects and supporting around 100 jobs.
Battery Storage Facility Coming to Greater Manchester
Further bolstering the UK’s clean power infrastructure, Statera Energy has confirmed plans to build a 680MW Battery Energy Storage System in Carrington, Greater Manchester. This site will have the capacity to power 2.2 million homes and will provide an estimated 200 regional jobs.
UK’s Global Leadership on Climate Action at COP30
Addressing the World Leaders’ Summit at COP30 in Belem, the Prime Minister highlighted the crucial role of clean energy in driving economic growth and ensuring energy security. The UK has committed more than £50 billion to clean energy since last year and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 81% by 2035.
The government has already outlined plans for five new clean energy colleges and launched a national scheme to recruit 400,000 workers into the sector by 2030. The COP30 summit will further strengthen the UK’s resolve to scale renewable energy globally, targeting a tripling of capacity by the end of the decade.
