Introduction to PDMC Scheme Enhancements
The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has unveiled significant updates to the Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) scheme, aimed at promoting efficient water usage and elevating farmer incomes. This initiative introduces greater flexibility for States and Union Territories (UTs) to implement micro-level water storage and conservation projects under the “Other Interventions” (OI) category.
Key Changes in Guidelines
Revised Flexibility for Water Management Activities
States and UTs can now tailor micro-level water management efforts—such as constructing diggis (traditional water storage ponds) and installing water harvesting systems—to address local requirements. These projects support both individual farmers and community-level applications, ensuring reliable water supply for micro-irrigation systems.
Expanded Funding Limits
Previously, funding for these activities was capped at 20% of a State/UT’s total allocation, with 40% reserved for North Eastern States, Himalayan States, and the UTs of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The new guidelines remove these rigid constraints, allowing States/UTs to surpass limits based on their unique needs and priorities.
Benefits for Farmers and Sustainability
These reforms encourage widespread adoption of micro-irrigation techniques, enhancing water-use efficiency, crop productivity, and overall farmer incomes. By integrating localized conservation measures, the scheme fosters sustainable agriculture, combats water scarcity, and supports resilient farming practices amid climate challenges.
