As part of Special Campaign 5.0, the Ministry of Coal, in collaboration with its Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), is driving transformative initiatives to enhance cleanliness, operational efficiency, and sustainability across the coal sector. From October 2 to October 31, 2025, the campaign has made significant strides, implementing best practices identified during its preparatory phase to modernize and promote eco-friendly operations.
Remarkable Progress in Cleanliness and Waste Management
The campaign has achieved impressive results, with 802 sites cleaned, covering 4,086,545 square feet of the targeted 8,251,511 square feet. Additionally, 4,763 metric tons of scrap have been disposed of against a target of 8,678 metric tons, generating ₹20 crores in revenue. The Ministry has also reviewed 73,756 physical files and 18,719 electronic files, weeding out or closing 15,089 files to streamline operations.

Innovative Best Practices
The Ministry of Coal has introduced several pioneering initiatives under Special Campaign 5.0, setting new benchmarks for sustainability and employee welfare.
1. Eco-Friendly Bio-Toilets at WCL
Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) inaugurated 33 bio-toilets across its mines in Nagpur, improving hygiene and promoting sustainable sanitation for workers. This initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to eco-friendly infrastructure.
2. Transforming Scrap into a Learning Hub at NLCIL
At NLC India Limited (NLCIL), an unused scrap room at TPS II Expansion was repurposed into a Learning Lab. This vibrant space fosters knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and employee development, reflecting NLCIL’s dedication to building a progressive and empowered workforce.

3. Green Initiatives for Sustainable Growth
A Green House was established at Rajeev Gandhi ITI, Barsingsar, NLCIL, to cultivate non-native plant species in a controlled environment. This initiative highlights the Ministry’s focus on innovative environmental practices and sustainable development.

4. Creative “E-Waste to Art” Workshop
WCL organized an “E-Waste to Art” workshop at its Nagpur headquarters, led by renowned artist Shri Anand Dhopte. Children of employees transformed discarded electronics into creative sculptures, including an Indian Army tank, an airplane, and a robot. This engaging activity promoted recycling, sustainability awareness, and inclusivity, offering a joyful and educational experience for participants.

Through these innovative practices, the Ministry of Coal is not only enhancing cleanliness and efficiency but also fostering creativity, sustainability, and employee development. Special Campaign 5.0 is paving the way for a modern, responsible, and forward-looking coal industry, aligning with the Ministry’s vision for a sustainable future.
