  • EU negotiators in New Delhi: 3–7 November 2025
  • Piyush Goyal visited Brussels: 27–28 October 2025
  • Virtual meeting held: 3 November 2025
  • Sabine Weyand in Delhi: 5–6 November 2025
  • High-level talks with Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal
  • Focus areas: trade in goods, services, rules of origin, technical matters
A high-level group of European Union officials has landed in the national capital to push forward talks on the long-pending free trade pact with India. The five-day session, running through the first week of November, seeks to iron out remaining hurdles and shape a deal that works equally well for both economies. The current round comes right after Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal returned from Belgium, where he met top EU trade official Maroš Šefčovič toward the end of October. Those conversations set the tone for deeper cooperation and a quicker path to finalising the agreement.

Key Areas Under Discussion

Teams from both sides will spend the week examining rules for goods and services movement, origin certificates, and related procedural details. The goal remains a forward-looking pact that respects each partner’s core interests while opening doors to greater business and innovation.

Adding weight to the dialogue, a virtual conference took place on the opening day of the visit, bringing Minister Goyal together with Commissioner Šefčovič and EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen. The exchange underlined the urgency both sides feel to wrap up a solid framework.

Top-Level Engagement Scheduled

Later in the week, EU trade director-general Sabine Weyand will join Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal for focused sessions on policy and technical points. These meetings are expected to clear several roadblocks that have slowed progress so far.

Overall, the visit signals strong political will from New Delhi and Brussels to deliver an equitable trade arrangement. Such a partnership promises expanded markets, fresh investment flows, and joint efforts toward green and digital growth.

As negotiators huddle in closed-door rooms, businesses on both continents watch closely. A successful India-EU FTA could reshape supply chains, boost job creation, and strengthen strategic ties in an uncertain global economy.
