Union Minister Kiren Rijiju Arrives in Bhutan to Lead Delegation for Return of Sacred Buddha Relics

Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha to Return to India on 25 November, Highlighting India-Bhutan Spiritual Ties
Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju reached Bhutan this afternoon as part of the delegation responsible for facilitating the return of the Sacred Relics of Lord Buddha. The relics have been on public display in Bhutan since 8 November 2025.
After arriving at Paro Airport, the Minister initiated the formal procedures for bringing back the relics, which attracted substantial devotion and spiritual participation from thousands of people across Bhutan during the exhibition period.
During the visit, Shri Rijiju met H.E. Dasho Tshering Tobgay, Prime Minister of Bhutan. Their interaction reflected the longstanding warmth in India-Bhutan relations, grounded in mutual trust, respect, shared values, and cultural ties. The Minister conveyed his appreciation for Bhutan’s deep reverence for the relics and observed that the teachings of Lord Buddha continue to reinforce harmony between the two countries.
As part of the activities, both sides released a booklet featuring 23 sacred sites associated with Guru Rinpoche. The publication was prepared by the International Buddhist Confederation and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in English, with the Embassy of India in Bhutan translating it into Dzongkha.
Shri Rijiju described the India-Bhutan relationship as a spiritual connection shaped over centuries, rooted in longstanding cultural and historical links.
Relics to Return on 25 November
Earlier in the day, the Minister departed from Air Force Station, Palam, to accompany the sacred relics back to India, marking an important phase in cultural cooperation between the two nations.
The Sacred Buddha Relics are scheduled to return to India on 25 November 2025, reflecting the shared Buddhist heritage of India and Bhutan and underscoring India’s commitment to promoting regional harmony, spiritual engagement, and cultural collaboration.
The transfer of the relics highlights the historic and enduring partnership between the two countries.
