About the Distinguished Alumni Award

Initiated in 1989, the Distinguished Alumni Award stands as the highest recognition offered by IIT Kanpur to its former students. Each year, the institute selects individuals who have demonstrated remarkable success in their careers, contributed significantly to the growth of the alma mater, or made noteworthy impacts on society and national development.

Past winners of this honour include prominent figures from diverse sectors such as academia, business, professional services, and public administration. The selection process involves close coordination with the alumni network to identify deserving candidates.

From Campus to National Leadership

Gyanesh Kumar’s journey from the classrooms of IIT Kanpur to heading the Election Commission of India highlights the institution’s role in producing leaders who shape public institutions. His batch of 1985 has now added another feather to its cap with this recognition.

The award presentation on Foundation Day underscores IIT Kanpur’s tradition of celebrating excellence among its graduates while inspiring current students. The campus event brought together faculty, students, and alumni to witness the honour bestowed upon the election chief.
