IAEA Experts Sample Sea off Fukushima in New Monitoring

Additional Measures Under the IAEA Framework on ALPS Treated Water Discharge

IAEA officials and international experts from third-party laboratories collect seawater and marine samples from a fishing vessel off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, as part of the December 2025 monitoring mission for ALPS treated water discharge.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) officials and experts from China, South Korea, Russia, and Switzerland collect seawater and fishery product samples off Fukushima on December 5, 2025, during the sixth independent monitoring mission of Japan’s ALPS treated water discharge.

As part of the additional measures agreed upon by Japan and the IAEA in September 2024, IAEA officials and experts from third-party laboratories are scheduled to visit Japan on December 5 to collect samples related to the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea.

This visit marks the sixth mission conducted under these measures, following previous activities carried out in October 2024 and in February, April, June, and September 2025.

Third-party laboratories from China, the Republic of Korea, Russia, and Switzerland will participate in the implementation of these additional measures.
