New Air Route Strengthens Japan–Palau Connectivity
In a significant step towards enhancing regional connectivity and friendship, Japan officially inaugurated its first regular direct flight from Narita International Airport to Palau on October 29, 2025. The event marked a major milestone in tourism cooperation between the two Pacific nations, promising to make travel easier and relations closer.
Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. HORII Iwao, represented the Japanese government at the launch ceremony. Delivering his remarks before the assembled guests, he expressed happiness over the long-awaited establishment of a direct air link between Narita and Palau. He noted that the new service will not only promote tourism but also deepen cultural and economic ties.
Encouraging Travel and Strengthening Tourism
Minister HORII emphasised that Palau’s stunning blue waters, rich marine biodiversity, and world-renowned diving sites make it an irresistible destination for Japanese travellers. With this new route, he said, many more visitors will now be able to experience the island nation’s natural beauty and hospitality first-hand. He added that the flight connection will also help boost Palau’s tourism-driven economy and support the recovery of international travel across the Asia-Pacific region.
The ceremony brought together key representatives from both nations, including H.E. Mr. Surangel S. Whipps Jr., President of the Republic of Palau, who attended along with Hon. Gustav Aitaro, Minister of State. The Palauan delegation’s participation underlined the importance both governments place on closer people-to-people exchanges and sustainable development through tourism.

Dialogue for Future Cooperation
During the event, State Minister HORII held discussions with President Whipps, exploring various ways to further strengthen bilateral relations. Their conversation covered potential areas of collaboration, especially in tourism promotion, environmental conservation, and infrastructure development.
Both sides acknowledged that direct air connectivity will open new avenues for cultural exchange, education, and business partnerships. For Japan, Palau represents not only a beautiful travel destination but also a close friend with deep historical and diplomatic ties. Likewise, Palau continues to value Japan’s contribution to its development, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability.
A Partnership Rooted in Shared Values
The Japan–Palau relationship has long been marked by mutual trust and cooperation. From development assistance to marine conservation projects, both nations have worked hand in hand on several global and regional challenges. The launch of this regular flight now adds a practical and symbolic dimension to that relationship, making it easier for citizens, businesses, and institutions to connect directly.
Observers view this development as part of Japan’s broader efforts to strengthen partnerships across the Pacific Islands region, enhancing tourism, economic engagement, and sustainable growth. The new Narita–Palau service is expected to encourage more travel exchanges, cultural programs, and private sector collaboration in the months ahead.
Gateway to a Stronger Pacific Partnership
The introduction of this regular flight is not merely about convenience—it reflects a commitment to closer regional integration and mutual growth. As flights begin to operate on a scheduled basis, both countries anticipate an increase in tourism flows, stronger people-to-people connections, and new business opportunities.
With clear skies ahead, the Narita–Palau route stands as a symbol of enduring friendship and a shared vision for a more connected Pacific. It represents the next step in a journey that brings Japan and Palau even closer—economically, culturally, and diplomatically.
