Government Supports Development of Mental Health AI Navigation Platform

New Zealanders seeking mental health assistance are expected to gain clearer access to available services through government funding provided to Whakarongorau for the creation of a mental health AI navigation platform, Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey says.

He says that uncertainty about where to seek help has contributed to unmet mental health needs for one third of children and more than a quarter of adults, and that the new platform is intended to reduce these obstacles by directing individuals to appropriate support.

According to Mr Doocey, users will be able to view the services accessible in their area and, in some cases, make direct bookings. The platform will also offer online tools for those reaching out, helping to intervene early and prevent issues from worsening.

He says the platform will improve awareness of existing telehealth services, alongside in-person options such as mental health practitioners in GP clinics or Gumboot Friday councillors, reinforcing that help is available throughout New Zealand.

Mr Doocey says that taking the initial step toward seeking support can often feel overwhelming, and that the digital platform will provide an entry point to help triage needs and offer guidance on next steps.

He says the mental health system remains too fragmented and requires stronger coordination. He adds that many people may not realise how much support is already available, and that the platform intends to increase public awareness of these options.

The minister says the initiative demonstrates that many solutions to existing mental health challenges already exist within the sector and require opportunities to be supported.

He says access to support should not be hindered, and that digital tools offer faster, around-the-clock availability for people wherever they are.

Mr Doocey says the government is concentrating on improving access to support, increasing frontline staff, and strengthening crisis responses, and that digital tools can contribute to these goals.
