Associate Regional Development Minister Mark Patterson (left, in cap) and Parliamentary Under-Secretary Jenny Marcroft (center, holding document) join local officials at the Jackson Bay announcement of $2.31 million RIF funding for wharf upgrades, 25 November 2025.

More than $2.31 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund will be used to upgrade the Jackson Bay Wharf on the West Coast, enhancing the region’s disaster resilience and assisting the local fishing industry, Associate Regional Development Minister Mark Patterson says.

Mr Patterson says Jackson Bay Wharf is the only natural deep-water wharf on the West Coast. He says its ability to operate in all weather conditions, unlike larger ports in the region, makes it an essential access point during natural disasters.

He says the upgrade will secure the wharf as a key location during emergencies and will support the fishing sector by maintaining effective seafood transport and supply processes.

Project Details and Funding

The Westland District Council is leading the project, which includes structural improvements to extend the wharf’s lifespan and the installation of digital surveillance and signage that will allow the Council to enforce launch fees used for ongoing maintenance. The total value of the project is $3.3 million, with the Council contributing $990,000.

Government Collaboration Highlighted

Parliamentary Under-Secretary to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries Jenny Marcroft, who spoke at the announcement, says the initiative demonstrates strong cooperation between local and central government.

Ms Marcroft says the wharf is in a severely deteriorated condition and that the upgrade is necessary to ensure it remains safe and dependable for users.

She says the grant illustrates investment in infrastructure that supports long-term economic development by sustaining existing industry while also improving resilience in the face of future challenges.

She acknowledged the efforts of fishers and industry representatives who worked to secure the upgrade and said the project shows how partnership can support regional needs.

Part of Wider Regional Programme

The Jackson Bay Wharf upgrade is the final part of the RIF West Coast Ports Infrastructure Upgrade Programme, which has included improvements at the Westport and Greymouth ports to enhance regional resilience and assist the fishing sector.

The $7.81 million RIF investment across the West Coast is expected to strengthen essential infrastructure and create up to 17 full-time equivalent jobs during the construction period, contributing immediate economic benefits along with long-term regional security.
