Modern Cancer Treatment Now Within Reach for Taranaki Patients

Residents of Taranaki now have access to state-of-the-art cancer treatment without the need to travel long distances. The Taranaki Cancer Centre has officially opened, bringing modern radiation and chemotherapy services to the heart of the region. Health Minister Simeon Brown said the facility marks a significant step forward in improving healthcare access and outcomes for local patients.

Advanced Technology to Improve Patient Outcomes

At the core of this facility is the region’s first Linear Accelerator (LINAC), a highly precise machine that targets cancer cells while minimising harm to healthy tissue. This innovation allows patients to undergo radiation therapy locally, which previously required travel to Palmerston North. Approximately 300 people from Taranaki need radiation therapy each year, and now up to 80% of these treatments can be completed within the region, saving time and reducing stress for patients and their families.

Expanded Chemotherapy and Family Support Facilities

The new centre has expanded its chemotherapy services, now operating five days a week instead of four. The department features 10 chemotherapy chairs, up from the previous eight, ensuring greater access and flexibility for treatment scheduling. The building also offers eight family consultation rooms with video-conferencing capabilities, two isolation rooms, and welcoming family spaces designed to provide comfort and emotional support during care.

Part of Taranaki’s Wider Health System Upgrade

The cancer centre forms a key part of the broader NZD 462.6 million redevelopment of Taranaki Base Hospital. The ongoing project includes the upcoming East Wing building, which will enhance capacity and introduce next-generation medical facilities for both patients and healthcare professionals.

Health Minister Highlights Long-Term Benefits

Minister Brown emphasised that the investment demonstrates New Zealand’s commitment to building a modern, resilient healthcare system that serves people closer to home. “This new cancer centre will help patients spend more time with loved ones instead of travelling long distances for care,” he said. “It ensures that the people of Taranaki receive world-class treatment supported by cutting-edge technology and expert clinicians.”
