NHS AI Trial Boosts Productivity with Major Time and Cost Savings

Groundbreaking AI Trial Enhances NHS Efficiency

A landmark trial involving over 30,000 NHS staff members has demonstrated the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Conducted across 90 NHS organizations, the pilot of Microsoft 365 Copilot has revealed significant time savings, allowing staff to prioritize patient care and improve overall productivity.

Significant Time Savings for NHS Staff

The trial showed that AI-powered administrative support can save NHS workers an average of 43 minutes per day, equivalent to five weeks annually per person. A full rollout could save up to 400,000 hours monthly, translating to millions of hours yearly. This reduction in administrative tasks enables healthcare professionals to focus on frontline care, enhancing patient outcomes.

Financial Benefits and Productivity Gains

The NHS estimates that adopting this technology could save millions of pounds monthly with 100,000 users, potentially reaching hundreds of millions in annual savings. These funds can be reinvested into improving patient care and frontline services. The trial aligns with the government’s 10 Year Health Plan, which saw a 2.7% productivity increase in acute trusts from April 2024 to March 2025, surpassing the 2% target.

Statements from Key Stakeholders

Health Innovation Minister Dr. Zubir Ahmed, an NHS surgeon, emphasized the impact of outdated technology on staff efficiency. He stated, “This partnership with Microsoft frees up staff from administrative tasks, allowing them to focus on treating patients. Innovations like this drive NHS productivity, ensuring better care and value for taxpayers.”

Darren Hardman, CEO of Microsoft UK & Ireland, added, “This trial proves AI’s potential to transform healthcare. By saving 43 minutes daily per worker, Microsoft 365 Copilot redirects hundreds of thousands of hours toward patient care, potentially saving hundreds of millions annually.”

AI Integration in Daily NHS Operations

Microsoft 365 Copilot is integrated into tools like Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, used daily by NHS staff. It saves 83,333 hours monthly in note-taking during over one million Teams meetings and 271,000 hours by summarizing complex email chains, with over 10.3 million emails sent monthly in the NHS. Microsoft Copilot Chat is now available across the NHS at no additional cost, with over 50,000 staff currently using it.

Driving Digital Transformation

The trial is part of the NHS’s shift from analogue to digital under the 10 Year Health Plan. By leveraging partnerships with companies like Microsoft, the NHS secures cost-effective, market-leading tools, enhancing efficiency and supporting the largest digital transformation in its history.
