Dame Julia Unwin Emerges as Top Choice
The UK Government has selected Dame Julia Unwin as the preferred nominee to lead the Charity Commission for England and Wales. The announcement was made by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, who highlighted Unwin’s extensive background spanning civil society and public sector roles.
Vast Experience in Civil Society and Regulation
Dame Julia has devoted much of her career to the charitable sector, with notable positions including her former role as Chief Executive of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. She also previously served as a Charity Commissioner during the late 1990s and spent nine years on the Housing Corporation’s board.
Her leadership of the Civil Society Futures Inquiry in 2018, along with her ongoing role as Chair of the Board of Governors at York St John University and the Smart Data Foundry, further solidify her credentials. The latter is a subsidiary of Edinburgh University focused on harnessing private sector data for public benefit.
Pre-Appointment Scrutiny Ahead
Before assuming the role, Dame Julia will appear before the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee on 25 November for pre-appointment evaluation. This is part of the standard process set under the Charities Act 2011.
Regulatory Role and Interim Leadership
The Chair of the Charity Commission is appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and the selection was supported by an advisory panel. Until the appointment process concludes, Mark Simms will continue serving as interim Chair until 24 January 2026.
