Government Reappoints Three Heritage Leaders

The UK government has confirmed the reappointment of three Trustees to the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) for a further four-year term. The decision reinforces the Fund’s leadership in preserving the nation’s cultural and historical assets. The Trustees include Carol Pyrah, Julian Glover, and Taryn Nixon, each bringing decades of expertise in heritage management, archaeology, journalism, and cultural policy.

Profiles of the Reappointed Trustees

Carol Pyrah: Champion of Local Heritage

Leading the North Committee, Carol Pyrah has a rich background in heritage and cultural preservation. Currently the Chief Operating Officer at Ripon Cathedral, she previously guided Urban Green Newcastle and the Historic Coventry Trust. With over 25 years living in the Yorkshire Dales, Carol has been involved in numerous regeneration projects, emphasising community involvement and heritage sustainability.

Julian Glover: Influential Voice in Cultural Policy

Julian Glover, an author and well-known journalist, chairs the Midlands and East Committee. He has advised the UK Government on environmental and transport matters and authored a biography of pioneering engineer Thomas Telford. A resident of Derbyshire, he also supports the Buxton International Festival as a board member. His career spans roles at the Guardian and Evening Standard, and he led the influential Landscapes Review for Defra.

Taryn Nixon: Advocate for Values-Based Archaeology

Taryn Nixon, chairing the London and South Committee, is an accomplished archaeologist with extensive leadership experience. She previously led the Museum of London Archaeology for nearly two decades and has contributed her expertise to several heritage organisations such as Historic England and National Trails UK. Recognised with an OBE in 2025, she has published work on the socio-economic role of archaeology and lives near Dartmoor National Park.

Each Trustee receives an annual remuneration of £20,749 under the Public Appointments Governance Code, with oversight from the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
