UK Deploys HMS Trent to Assist Hurricane-Hit Jamaica
Hurricane Melissa’s impact on Jamaica has prompted the UK government to deploy Royal Navy vessel HMS Trent to support local disaster relief efforts. The ship reached Falmouth with a 75-member crew including engineering specialists, who will work closely with Jamaican authorities on infrastructure repairs and damage assessments.
Designed for patrol and fast response, HMS Trent is equipped with advanced tools to support on-ground recovery. The vessel carries rigid inflatable Zodiac boats that allow rapid transportation of crew and aid to affected coastal areas. Additionally, onboard drones are being used to gather aerial footage to help pinpoint damage zones and coordinate urgent repairs.
Expanded UK Aid to Support Local Recovery
Alongside the military support, the UK has already delivered more than 3,000 shelter kits and 1,500 solar-powered lanterns to assist those whose homes and power supplies have been disrupted. A Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Rapid Deployment Team is also in Jamaica to assist British nationals affected by the disaster.
