Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla Addresses Constitution Day Event in Jaipur

Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla attended a Constitution Day programme at Manipal University in Jaipur, where he highlighted that the Constitution is not merely a legal framework but a reflection of India’s identity and national character. He said that principles such as justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity form the core of the democratic system and emphasized the importance of young people understanding and practicing these values.
Focus on Connecting Youth With Constitutional Values
Shri Birla stated that initiatives like Know the Constitution are essential to help the younger generation connect with the essence of democracy. He observed that universities represent India’s diverse social fabric, with students from various states and countries studying together, and added that this diversity is a key strength that the Constitution unifies.
He explained that Parliament is working to strengthen the study of the Constitution in schools, colleges, and universities. According to him, India’s future will be reinforced when the younger generation gains a deeper understanding of the nation’s heritage and democratic traditions. He also said that universities should evolve into global hubs of research and innovation to support the vision of a developed India.
Recollection of Constitution-Making Process
Shri Birla noted that the drafting of the Constitution was an extension of the freedom movement. He said that India achieved independence through sustained efforts marked by non-violence, sacrifice, and dedication. After independence, he added, the task of nation-building presented significant challenges due to the presence of numerous princely states, cultural diversity, and differing ideologies.
He recalled that Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad, and other members of the Constituent Assembly engaged in detailed deliberations for three years to prepare a Constitution that ensures justice and rights for every citizen.
Youth as a Key Strength for the Future
The Lok Sabha Speaker said that India’s youth, equipped with knowledge, innovation, technology, and culture, will be the country’s major strength in the coming years. He noted that young Indians are contributing to global efforts in fields such as climate change, medicine, disaster management, and technology. He added that educational institutions should continue to reinforce constitutional values, a sense of duty, and national interest among students.
