Lok Sabha Speaker Pays Tributes to Shri G. V. Mavalankar on His Birth Anniversary

Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla offered floral tributes to Shri Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, the first Speaker of the Lok Sabha, in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan today on his birth anniversary.
Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha Shri Harivansh, Members of Parliament, former Members, Lok Sabha Secretary-General Shri Utpal Kumar Singh and other dignitaries also participated in the tribute ceremony.
Shri Mavalankar was born on 27 November 1888 in Baroda, presently in Gujarat, and played a key role in the development of India’s parliamentary framework. His legislative career began in 1937 as a member of the Bombay Legislative Assembly from Ahmedabad, where he served as Speaker until 1946. He later headed the Sixth Central Legislative Assembly during the period leading up to Independence.
Following 1947, he held the positions of Speaker of the Constituent Assembly (Legislative) and Speaker of the Provisional Parliament. After the establishment of the First Lok Sabha in 1952, he was unanimously elected Speaker on 15 May 1952 and served in this role until his passing on 27 February 1956. His approach to parliamentary conduct and procedures continues to influence the functioning of the institution.
The portrait of Shri Mavalankar, created by Shri Madhav Satawalekar, is displayed in the Inner Lobby of Samvidhan Sadan. It was unveiled by Prime Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru on 7 September 1956.
