Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal visited the Namrup Fertilizer Plant of Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited in Dibrugarh district to assess various aspects of the operational facility along with ongoing and forthcoming expansion initiatives.

Review of Expansion Initiatives

During the visit, the Union Minister stated that the Namrup Fertilizer Plant is undergoing major development with the establishment of a new brownfield Ammonia-Urea complex involving an investment exceeding ₹10,000 crore. He said this initiative aims to support agricultural output, generate employment and strengthen industrial infrastructure while contributing to the development of the Northeast.

Sonowal highlighted that the corporation, which is the oldest fertilizer manufacturing unit in the Northeast, has been catering to farmers since its establishment. He said plans are in place to add a fourth plant at the Namrup location, supported by the Government of India. The upcoming facility is expected to be completed within the next five years and will have an annual production capacity of 12.5 lakh metric tonnes.

Anticipated Impact of the Expansion

The Minister noted that the planned enhancement is expected to turn the plant into a major production center capable of meeting fertilizer requirements across the Northeast and facilitating exports to Bhutan and Myanmar. He added that markets in West Bengal and Bihar will also be served with the increased output.

Sonowal expressed appreciation to the Prime Minister and the Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers, stating that the project addresses a long-standing expectation of the people of the Northeast and will play a role in national development.
