According to the Ministry of Railways, more than 1.5 crore passengers have traveled on trains operated so far during the festive season, with projections estimating over 2.5 crore by the season’s end. This massive undertaking reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to meeting the heightened travel demand during festivals like Chhath Puja.
Enhanced Infrastructure and Special Trains
Significant investments in railway infrastructure have transformed festive travel. Previously limited to a few hundred, the number of special trains has surged to a record-breaking figure. Additionally, track construction has scaled up from 400–600 km per year a decade ago to over 4,000 km annually, enabling better connectivity and capacity.
Special Arrangements for Chhath Puja
With Chhath Puja in full swing, Indian Railways has implemented robust measures to manage the peak travel period, particularly in Bihar and adjoining areas of Uttar Pradesh. Key initiatives include:
- Holding Areas: Large holding areas have been set up at 30 major stations in Bihar and nearby UP to manage crowds effectively.
- Extra Facilities: Additional ticket counters, CCTV surveillance, and essential amenities have been introduced at stations like Patna and Danapur to enhance passenger convenience.
- Safety Measures: At Danapur Railway Station, ambulances and medical teams are on standby 24/7 to handle emergencies, ensuring passenger safety.

At Rajendra Nagar Terminal in Patna, dedicated railway staff are assisting passengers, ensuring a safe and pleasant journey. The Railways’ round-the-clock efforts reflect their commitment to passenger comfort and order during the festive rush.

Passengers have shared overwhelmingly positive feedback about their travel experiences. From easy bookings to clean coaches and well-managed stations, Indian Railways has earned praise for its improved services. A passenger at Jamalpur Railway Station noted the absence of overcrowding, thanks to the increased number of special trains, while another appreciated the cleanliness and festive atmosphere created by playing Chhath-related melodies.
Vande Bharat Express Adds Festive Cheer
A special Vande Bharat Express running between New Delhi and Patna has elevated the festive experience by playing traditional Chhath melodies onboard, a first-of-its-kind initiative. With 156 Vande Bharat Express services operational across India, this special train adds to the regular services, ensuring seamless travel for passengers heading home for Chhath Puja.
Commitment to Safety and Comfort
Indian Railways’ focus on cleanliness, punctuality, and safety has been lauded by passengers. Travelers have highlighted timely trains, clean coaches and toilets, good food, and comfortable bedding.
