In a significant move towards cleaner and sustainable infrastructure, the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the installation of solar power plants along the elevated portion of Package-1 (Delhi Portion) of the Delhi Saharanpur Dehradun highway (NH-709B) in Phase-1. The event was held in the presence of Minister of State for Corporate Affairs & Road Transport and Highways Shri Harsh Malhotra, with Shri V. Umashankar, Secretary, MoRTH, and Shri Sanjay Sharma, Director, SECI Ltd, also in attendance.

Promoting Renewable Energy on Highways

The MoU is aimed at developing renewable energy projects integrated with highway infrastructure, utilizing solar energy to power highway facilities and reduce the carbon footprint. This initiative is designed not only to generate clean energy but also to serve as a model for sustainable infrastructure development across India.

Government Commitment to Sustainability

Shri Harsh Malhotra emphasized that the MoU demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy and sustainable development. The partnership between SECI and NHAI is expected to introduce innovative, environmentally friendly solutions for highway infrastructure.

Impact on Environment and Future Projects

By harnessing solar energy, the project will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. It will also showcase the feasibility of integrating renewable energy into infrastructure development, setting a precedent for future sustainable highway projects.

Aligning with National Goals

The collaboration between SECI and NHAI aligns with the broader vision of making India Net Zero by 2070, as envisioned by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Both agencies highlighted their shared commitment to sustainability, renewable energy adoption, and reducing the carbon footprint in infrastructure development.
