India Strengthens Textile and Sericulture Cooperation with Georgia

A high-level delegation from the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, led by Shri P. Sivakumar, Member Secretary of the Central Silk Board and Secretary General of the International Sericultural Commission, concluded a multi-sectoral engagement in Georgia from 17 to 21 November 2025 aimed at enhancing cooperation in sericulture, textiles, apparel, and carpet trade.
The delegation participated in the 11th BACSA International Conference CULTUSERI 2025, where Shri Sivakumar delivered the Opening Address on behalf of the International Sericultural Commission, outlining India’s position in traditional silk knowledge and its application within creative and cultural industries. He also presented a technical paper titled “The Chronicles of Wild Silk.”
Dr. S. Manthira Moorthy, Director (Tech) of the Central Silk Board, presented a paper on Indo-Bulgarian collaboration in developing a productive bivoltine silkworm hybrid for India.
During the visit, the Central Silk Board showcased the 5-in-1 Silk Stole, a premium product combining Mulberry, Oak Tasar, Tropical Tasar, Muga, and Eri silks. Conceived under the initiative of the Member Secretary, the product was highlighted as a distinctive representation of India’s silk heritage with potential market value.
The delegation met with Georgian universities, sericulture laboratories, research centres, textile companies, apparel manufacturers, carpet traders, and the Georgian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. These meetings focused on opportunities for expanding textile trade, encouraging industry collaboration, and exploring joint research in sericulture.
Discussions with senior Government of Georgia officials addressed new avenues for cooperation, improved market access, and trade expansion in textiles, apparel, carpets, and value-added silk products.
