New Delhi, October 22, 2025: The Ministry of Finance, Department of Economic Affairs, has issued a notification announcing the minting of a special ₹200 commemorative coin to mark the 200th anniversary of Rani Channamma’s victory at Kittur. The coin will be minted under the Coinage (Issue of Commemorative Coin on the occasion of 200th Anniversary of Rani Channamma’s victory at Kittur) Rules, 2025.

Denomination and Purpose
The commemorative coin will be of ₹200 denomination and will be issued under the authority of the Central Government. It is being released to celebrate the bicentenary of the historic victory of Rani Channamma of Kittur, one of India’s earliest freedom fighters who led a revolt against British colonial rule in 1824.
Design Details
The design of the coin is described in detail in the First Schedule of the notification:
- Obverse: Features the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar at the centre with the motto “सत्यमेव जयते” inscribed below. The left periphery bears “भारत” in Devanagari, and the right side has “INDIA” in English. Below the Lion Capitol, the coin carries the Rupee symbol “₹” along with the numeral “200”.
- Reverse: Displays the image of Rani Channamma at the centre. The years “1824” and “2024” are inscribed on the left and right sides of the image respectively. The upper periphery bears the Hindi inscription ‘दकत्तूर में रानी चन्नम्मा की विजय की 200वीं वर्षगांठ’, while the lower periphery carries the English inscription ‘200TH ANNIVERSARY OF RANI CHANNAMMA’S VICTORY AT KITTUR’.

Minting and Authority

About Rani Channamma of Kittur
Rani Channamma (1778–1829) was the Queen of Kittur, in present-day Karnataka, who led an armed rebellion against the British East India Company in 1824 — decades before the First War of Independence in 1857. Her resistance to colonial annexation policies made her one of India’s first women freedom fighters and a symbol of courage and patriotism.
