Nation Pedals for Fitness: Fit India Sundays on Cycle Unites Millions

A Nationwide Fitness Revolution

The Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative has transformed into a vibrant nationwide fitness movement, uniting over 14 lakh citizens across 1,20,000 locations. Launched in December 2024 with just 500 participants in Delhi, this campaign, now in its 45th edition, brings together more than 50,000 people weekly to celebrate health, joy, and community through cycling and fitness activities.

Leadership and Vision

Led by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Yogasana Bharat, and MY Bharat, this initiative is a cornerstone of the Fit India Movement. It promotes the philosophy of “Aadha Ghanta Roz – Fitness Ka Dose”, encouraging 30 minutes of daily physical activity. The movement gained prominence in the 117th episode of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat, where he praised its ability to unite diverse groups in a shared pursuit of health and togetherness.

Ministerial Support and Community Engagement

Under the guidance of Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the campaign has evolved into a Jan Andolan for fitness. It engages a wide array of participants, including Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), doctors, teachers, government employees, schoolchildren, Members of Parliament, lawyers, postmen, healthcare workers, Safai Senanis, state police forces, and Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWAs). This diversity has turned local streets and parks into vibrant hubs of energy and camaraderie.

Celebrity and Athlete Endorsements

The movement has been amplified by the participation of celebrated figures such as World Boxing Champion Meenakshi Hooda, who joined the 45th edition at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium. Other notable personalities include The Great Khali, Jackie Shroff, Rahul Bose, Yogeshwar Dutt, Mirabai Chanu, and Lovlina Borgohain, whose involvement has inspired the youth to embrace fitness as a shared social movement.

Festive Flexibility and Community Involvement

During the festive season, the initiative adapted with a unique “Cycle from Home” format, allowing participants to join from their homes, neighbourhoods, and local lanes. Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya led by example, cycling with friends and villagers, reinforcing that fitness is a way of life accessible to all. The involvement of leading fitness chains like Cult Fit, Gold’s Gym, Fitness First, and Fitspire has further amplified the movement, with 50,000 gyms nationwide hosting cycling, stretching, and open-air workouts.

Fitness Beyond Cycling

Beyond cycling, the initiative includes activities like Zumba, rope skipping, and Yogasana, designed to engage all age groups. The participation of medical professionals underscores the importance of preventive health through everyday action, reinforcing that fitness is the foundation of a resilient India.

Expanding Reach and Impact

From Kargil to Kerala, and Delhi to Assam, the movement now spans 1,20,000 locations, supported by 3,500 NaMo Fit India Cycling Clubs. Events are held at SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), SAI Training Centres (STCs), and Khelo India Centres, ensuring widespread participation. Venues like SAI NCOE Guwahati, SAI STC Raipur, and SAI STC Dharamshala have become key hubs for this citizen-led fitness wave.
