DRDO Kicks Off Preparations for ESTIC-2025 in Hyderabad
On October 17, 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) held a Curtain Raiser event for the Emerging Science, Technology & Innovation Conclave (ESTIC-2025) at the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad. As a key organizer, DRDO will lead the thematic session on “Electronics & Semiconductor Manufacturing,” one of the 11 focus areas of the conclave.
Keynote Address by DRDO Chairman
Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development (DDR&D) and Chairman of DRDO, addressed the gathering, emphasizing the critical role of semiconductors in modern technology. He highlighted their importance in powering essential systems across healthcare, communications, transportation, defense, and space. Dr. Kamat underscored that semiconductors are pivotal for national security, economic growth, and technological sovereignty in an era of increasing digitalization and automation.
India’s Semiconductor Journey
Dr. Kamat reflected on India’s progress since the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) in 2021. In just four years, India has moved from vision to action, establishing a foundation for semiconductor innovation. He outlined the national goal to position India among the top three global leaders in semiconductor research, innovation, and workforce development by 2036.
DRDO’s Achievements in Semiconductor Technology
DRDO has achieved significant milestones in semiconductor technology, including the development of indigenous methods for producing 4-inch Silicon Carbide (SiC) wafers and fabricating Gallium Nitride (GaN) High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs) with up to 150W capacity. These advancements mark a step toward self-reliance in critical technologies.
About ESTIC-2025
The ESTIC-2025, scheduled for November 3–5, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, is a collaborative effort by 13 Ministries and Departments of the Government of India, guided by the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA). The conclave, themed “Viksit Bharat 2047 – Pioneering Sustainable Innovation, Technological Advancement, and Empowerment,” aims to foster innovation and collaboration across various scientific and technological domains.
