UNIDO Showcases Collaborative Approach Toward a Sustainable Industrial Future
Kyiv hosted the first Green Industrial Recovery of Ukraine Day, where representatives from government bodies, international partners, business organizations and media gathered to review collaborative progress in rebuilding Ukraine’s industrial landscape on a sustainable path. The event offered an overview of the Green Industrial Recovery Programme for 2024 to 2028 and officially launched its largest initiative focusing on technology partnerships with Japan.
Japan-Funded Project to Accelerate Industrial Modernization
The key initiative presented is financed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI), with a total project budget of USD 188 million. The effort aims to strengthen collaboration between Ukrainian and Japanese industries through technology transfer, business co-creation and professional skills development. According to UNIDO leadership, the project is expected to support more than 30,000 Ukrainians and help deploy or pilot over 40 modern technologies across strategically important sectors.
Nearly 50 Japanese start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises are already contributing across several fields, including agri-business, ICT, hydrogen energy, circular economy, productivity enhancement, assistive equipment and telemedicine.
Japan Sees Potential in Sharing Its Post-Reconstruction Experience
Japan’s Ambassador to Ukraine underlined that Japan’s own history of post-disaster reconstruction and technological advancement offers valuable lessons for Ukraine’s recovery. A message from the Vice-Minister for International Affairs of METI noted that Japan and Ukraine have established 108 cooperation documents, which includes a joint declaration on industrial policy cooperation.
Programme Strengthens Resilience and Competitiveness
The event also featured progress updates from ongoing projects working on energy efficiency, circular economy, innovation and vocational empowerment. These initiatives aim to help Ukrainian industries become more competitive and resilient by integrating resource efficiency and new business models.
Partnerships at the Core of Ukraine’s Economic Revival
Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture stated that the collaboration with UNIDO and the Government of Japan strengthens the country’s industrial modernization strategy and supports long-term resilience. He emphasized that expanding international partnerships is crucial for positioning Ukraine as a participant in the global industrial system.
As of October 2025, UNIDO is managing 13 active projects in Ukraine, collectively valued at more than USD 210 million. Funding partners include Austria, Bulgaria, Czechia, the European Union, Germany, Japan, Poland, Switzerland and the Global Environment Facility.
