State to Begin Coordinated Action Against Chitta
The government in Himachal Pradesh is preparing to roll out an extensive Anti-Chitta Rally and awareness drive aimed at eliminating the growing use and illegal trade of chitta in the state. During a high-level meeting in Shimla, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said that the campaign will formally begin on 15 November 2025. The inaugural rally will move from the Ridge to Chaura Maidan, where elected representatives, students, community members and dignitaries will join the effort to demonstrate collective resolve.
Three-Month Program to Reach Grassroots
The Chief Minister emphasized that this initiative will run for three months and will operate at several levels, involving government departments, police forces, educational institutions and community groups. The goal is to reach the grassroots and take strict measures against those engaged in the supply and distribution of chitta. A special police cell will be established to support rapid and coordinated enforcement.
Panchayats Identified for Focused Intervention
According to the details shared in the meeting, the police department has already mapped the panchayats most affected by the drug problem. Special attention will be directed toward these areas, where targeted awareness and enforcement actions are planned. Anti-Chitta volunteers will be trained in colleges to help build awareness among young people.
Drug Prevention Committees at Panchayat Level
The Chief Minister also noted that drug prevention committees will be formed at the panchayat level. Each committee will have seven members and will meet every month to assess local conditions, submit reports and coordinate with district authorities. These committees will organize awareness programs in schools and community spaces, highlighting the harmful effects of narcotics and encouraging preventive action through participation and information-sharing.
Coordination Across Departments
The Chief Minister will personally monitor the progress of this campaign. Representatives from police, education, public outreach groups and volunteers will work collectively to achieve the desired results. Senior officials including Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania, Chief Secretary Sanjay Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary Home K.K. Pant, Director General of Police Ashok Tiwari, Principal Secretary Finance Devesh Kumar and Secretary Finance Abhishek Jain attended the meeting where the strategy was reviewed.
