Swiss Innovation Powers Next-Gen Solid-State Batteries

Dübendorf-based start-up BTRY AG, an Empa-ETH Zurich spin-off, has successfully raised $5.7 million in an oversubscribed seed round. The funding will be used to move from laboratory innovation to full-scale production of ultra-thin solid-state batteries, designed for compact devices requiring fast charging and high durability.

Investors Back BTRY’s Deep-Tech Vision

The funding round was spearheaded by Redstone VC, alongside contributions from Bloomhaus Ventures, Linear Capital, Kickfund, Kick Foundation, and the CustomCells founders, Leopold König and Torge Thönnessen. Long-term supporters HTGF (High-Tech Gründerfonds) and Zürcher Kantonalbank reaffirmed their confidence by reinvesting in the start-up.

According to Moritz Futscher, CEO and Co-founder of BTRY, the strong participation from experienced industrial investors underscores trust in the company’s technology and market readiness. He added that the new funds would enable BTRY to expand its industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing line and secure partnerships for integration into next-generation connected devices.

Transforming Battery Performance: From Lab to Industrial Line

BTRY’s solid-state thin-film batteries combine one-minute charging, high thermal stability (operating safely at up to 150°C), and non-flammable solid electrolytes. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, these ultra-thin cells—starting at just 0.1 mm—can deliver power directly to wireless systems without extra capacitors.

By adapting techniques from semiconductor fabrication to battery production, BTRY aims to set a new global standard for compact and reliable energy storage. This breakthrough addresses key challenges in powering connected labels, high-temperature industrial sensors, and lightweight consumer electronics.

European Deep-Tech at the Forefront

Redstone VC’s Investment Director Mohamed Foulser highlighted that potential customers in logistics and IoT sectors are ready for ultra-small, fast-charging batteries. Similarly, Pascal Stürchler, CEO of Bloomhaus Ventures, praised BTRY as a prime example of “Swiss deep-tech excellence,” combining material innovation with scalable industrial design.

Sustainable and Strategic Manufacturing

BTRY’s approach to production ensures sustainability through solvent-free processes and minimal material waste. Its model reflects Europe’s growing ambition to compete with Asian battery manufacturing by focusing on precision, safety, and high-end applications rather than volume.

Tianyi Zhou, Principal at Linear Capital, noted that Asia has long led battery production, but European innovation like BTRY’s demonstrates strong potential for collaboration that blends Swiss precision with industrial expertise from Asia.
