Tokyo, November 11, 2025: Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr. Shimada Tomoaki, held a courtesy meeting with H.E. Ms. Busadee Santipitaks, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Mekong River Commission (MRC) Secretariat, to discuss enhancing collaboration between Japan and the MRC for sustainable development in the Mekong region.
Focus on Sustainable and Equitable Use of the Mekong River
During the meeting, Mr. Shimada welcomed CEO Busadee’s visit to Japan and reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the stability and development of the Mekong region. He highlighted Japan’s dedication to working with the Mekong River Commission, which plays a key role in promoting coordination and dialogue among the countries sharing the Mekong River to ensure its sustainable and equitable management.
Strengthening Technical and Financial Cooperation
CEO Busadee expressed appreciation for Japan’s consistent support, both in financial and human resource capacities, towards MRC’s initiatives. She emphasized the importance of continued collaboration with Japan to address pressing challenges such as flood and drought management, as well as water pollution in the Mekong basin.
Shared Vision for Regional Development
Both sides agreed to strengthen their partnership to promote practical cooperation and effective solutions for environmental and water resource challenges in the Mekong region. They reiterated their mutual goal of enhancing Japan-Mekong cooperation through shared technical expertise and joint development initiatives.
The meeting underscored Japan’s long-standing role as a key development partner in Southeast Asia and its ongoing efforts to support the Mekong River Commission’s mission of fostering sustainable growth and environmental balance across the region.
