Narnaul, November 12 – Civil Surgeon Dr. Ashok Kumar inaugurated the “Social Awareness and Action for Pneumonia Elimination (SOS) Programme” in Narnaul, which will run from November 12 to February 28. The programme aims to prevent pneumonia among children under five years of age through active community participation and health surveys.

During the launch meeting, Dr. Kumar highlighted that pneumonia is caused by infection in the lungs and remains a major cause of death among children below five years in India. He advised parents to identify key symptoms such as rapid breathing, chest retraction, or high fever, and to seek immediate medical attention. He also emphasized preventive steps including keeping children warm during winter, exclusive breastfeeding for six months, ensuring complete immunization, and avoiding indoor smoking.

Deputy Civil Surgeon (Immunization) Dr. Narendra Kumar informed that ASHA workers and ANMs will conduct door-to-door surveys to identify children with pneumonia symptoms and spread awareness among parents. Suspected cases will be referred immediately to the nearest health centre. Early detection, he noted, can significantly reduce complications and hospital admissions.
