New Indian Standards for Earthquake and Industrial Safety

New Indian Standards Established for Earthquake and Industrial Safety

Introduction

On 03 November 2025, several new Indian Standards (IS) have been officially established to improve earthquake-resistant design and industrial safety. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has issued these updates, which include revisions to earthquake hazard criteria for structures, industrial boiler testing, polished building stones specifications, and service valves for air conditioning and refrigeration purposes. The new standards aim to modernize safety practices and provide clear guidelines for design and testing.

Key Updates

Earthquake-Resistant Design Standards

The updates include IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2025 and IS 1893 (Part 5) : 2025, which provide the latest criteria for earthquake-resistant design of structures. These standards replace the older IS 1893 (Part 1) : 2016, effective from 03 May 2026. These revisions are expected to strengthen building safety against seismic hazards and ensure uniform design practices.

Industrial Boiler Safety

IS 13980 : 2025 has been introduced as a first revision for acceptance tests on industrial boilers. It replaces IS 13980 : 1995, effective from 03 May 2026. This update is aimed at improving safety and testing procedures in industrial boiler operations.

Building Materials and HVAC Components

New standards for construction materials and HVAC components include:

  • IS 14223 (Part 2) : 2025 for polished building stones such as marble and similar stones.
  • IS 19409 : 2025 for service valves used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

These standards have been established to improve material quality and ensure safe operation of HVAC equipment.

Impact on Public and Industry

The establishment of these standards ensures safer building practices, higher quality construction materials, and improved industrial safety protocols. Builders, engineers, and manufacturers will need to comply with these updated standards to ensure legal compliance and enhance safety for the general public.
