Delhi Lt. Governor Extends Powers to Police Commissioner
The Lt. Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has authorized the Commissioner of Police, Delhi to exercise additional detention powers under the National Security Act, 1980. This extension is effective from 19 October 2025 to 18 January 2026. The decision aims to strengthen law enforcement capabilities while maintaining public safety and order in the city.

During this period, the Commissioner of Police may act as the detaining authority under subsection (2) of section 3 of the National Security Act, 1980. This temporary delegation allows for more immediate and localized action in matters of national security within Delhi.

Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi is satisfied that it is necessary to do so; Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub section (3) of section 3, read with clause (e) of Section 2 of the National Security Act, 1980, the Lt. Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi is pleased to direct that during the period 19/10/2025 to 18/01/2026 the Commissioner of Police, Delhi may also exercise the powers of detaining authority under sub section (2) of the section 3 of the aforesaid Act.
