Prime Minister Meets Japanese Prime Minister on G20 Summit Sidelines in Johannesburg
Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Sanae Takaichi, on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. This interaction marked Prime Minister Modi’s first in-person meeting with Prime Minister Takaichi following their telephone conversation on 29 October 2025.
Reaffirmation of the India-Japan Partnership
The two leaders reiterated the significance of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, which is anchored in historical ties, shared principles, mutual goodwill, and a joint commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. They emphasized their dedication to advancing cooperation for regional and global peace, prosperity and stability.
Review of Bilateral Progress
The leaders noted the consistent development in bilateral relations since the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit. They called for swift implementation of the outcomes agreed upon across multiple areas, including defense and security, trade and investment, small and medium enterprises, Artificial Intelligence, critical minerals, semiconductors, infrastructure development, technology and innovation, and people-to-people exchanges.
They also discussed prospects for collaboration in strategic sectors and exchanged views on developments at the regional and global levels. Prime Minister Takaichi conveyed strong support for the AI Summit scheduled to be hosted by India in February 2026.
Shared Committment to Regional Stability
Both leaders highlighted that India and Japan continue to regard each other as valued partners and trusted friends. They underlined that close cooperation between the two countries plays an essential role in promoting peace, prosperity and stability at the regional and global levels.
The leaders agreed to maintain regular communication and expressed the intention to meet again at the earliest suitable opportunity.
