From the quiet agricultural town of Bazpur in Nainital district to the forefront of India’s engineering and energy innovations, the journey of Dr. Harjinder Singh Cheema is a remarkable story of perseverance, vision, and national pride. Today known widely as the Chairman and Promoter Director of Cheema Boilers Limited (CBL), Dr. Cheema represents a rare blend of industrial leadership, research-oriented thinking, and unwavering faith in India’s technological potential.

Early Life and Foundations of Discipline

Born and raised in Bazpur, Dr. Cheema completed his schooling in the serene Himalayan foothills, a setting that nurtured curiosity and resilience in equal measure. His formative years were marked by a strong sense of discipline and service, values he would later carry into his professional and entrepreneurial life. His first major milestone came with his enrolment in marine engineering studies in Pune. By 1975, he completed his engineering degree, setting the stage for an extraordinary journey that would bridge defence service, industrial leadership, and pioneering innovation.

Service to the Nation: The Indian Navy Years

Before beginning his corporate career, Dr. Cheema served in the Indian Navy from 1967 to 1976, where he trained in marine engineering and contributed actively during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War. His exemplary performance earned him commendations from Admiral S. N. Kohli, a recognition that still stands as one of his proudest achievements. The Navy years cemented his lifelong commitment to discipline, precision, and nation-building.

Stepping into Industry: The Thermax Era

In 1976, Dr. Cheema joined Thermax Limited as Branch Manager. Over the next twelve years, he gained deep insights into boiler technology, energy systems, customer needs, and the operational challenges of India’s growing industrial ecosystem. This experience proved invaluable when he took the bold step of becoming an entrepreneur.

Entrepreneurship Rooted in Vision

In 1990, armed with technical expertise, industry experience, and a modest capital of just ₹10,000, Dr. Cheema founded Cheema Engineering Services Pvt. Ltd. His early work focused on retrofitting boilers to improve efficiency and safety an endeavour that earned him reliability and respect in the sector.
By the year 2000, his ambitions had grown alongside his expertise. He established Cheema Boilers Limited (CBL), which he continues to lead today as Chairman.

Building Cheema Boilers Limited: A Global Engineering Force

Over the past two decades, under Dr. Cheema’s leadership, CBL has transformed into one of India’s most respected boiler and energy engineering companies. With a 30-acre green campus at Kurali near Chandigarh, the company now employs over 400 engineers and a total workforce exceeding 1,500 people. CBL manufactures a broad range of high-quality boilers and allied systems that serve industries across the globe.

The company recorded an impressive turnover of ₹7,500 million in the last financial year, reinforcing its position as an industry leader rooted in quality, innovation, and customer trust. Dr. Cheema’s leadership philosophy is grounded in self-reliance, inspired by the national vision articulated by India’s Prime Minister. His approach combines cost-effective engineering, indigenous innovation, and sustainability—values that have guided many of the organization’s research breakthroughs.

Innovation That Serves the Nation: A Legacy of Patents

A hallmark of Dr. Cheema’s career is his relentless focus on invention and practical innovation. His work spans hydrogen generation, effluent management, fuel cell technology, emission control, and sustainable cremation systems. Many of these innovations are registered as patents, reflecting years of research and experimentation.

Patent 1: Self-Sustainable Graphite Fuel Cell

A breakthrough that replaces costly palladium with inexpensive graphite. This doped graphite-based fuel cell dramatically reduces the cost of fuel cell systems, making clean energy more accessible. Doped graphite fuel cell. This technology will reduce the high cost of fuel cells presently being made with palladium which is an expensive material. Whereas, in this technology graphite is used which is the cheapest available natural resource.

Patent 2: Electromagnetic Electrolyzer for Hydrogen Production

A novel electrolyzer design that uses permanent magnets to improve electron flow and reduce electrical power consumption a significant advancement for green hydrogen economics. In this technology the use permanent magnets to enhance the flow of electrons to reduce the power consumption required for electrolyzation. This technology drastically reduces the requirement of electrical energy.

Patent 3: Mechanical Emissions Handling Device for Furnaces

An innovation that uses cyclone separation instead of power-hungry PSA systems to isolate gases such as CO₂ and CH₄. This mechanical separation method saves substantial power and operational costs. In this device, we are separating gases mechanically with cyclone separation principle against PSA (Pressure Swing Adsorption) which is an highly economical and power saving technology. In this technology, CO2 and CH4 can be separated mechanically.

Patent 4: Eco-Friendly On-Site Hydrogen Generation Method

A system that reheats steam beyond 900°C to naturally split hydrogen and oxygen. This method provides a more economical alternative to conventional electrolysis. In this technology, we are re-heating the steam to a temperature beyond 900°C, so that the hydrogen and oxygen are split and we use this hydrogen as fuel. An economical method over electrolysis.

Patent 5: Novel Boiler for Distillery Waste Disposal

This pioneering Concentration and Evaporation technology converts distillery effluent into combustible input, achieving Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD). With over 100 installations, it has had significant national environmental impact. This technology is called Concentration and Evaporation wherein, we concentrate the distillery effluent water and then burn in specially designed boiler to make a distillery ZERO LIQUID DISCHARGE. We have more then 100+ working installations on this technology.

Patent 6: Portable Multi-Tier Car Parking System

A space-saving innovation that eliminates the need for car turning. Cars are stacked vertically in three layers, enabling four cars to be parked in the space normally required for one. Any car takes 3 time space for turning to what it is needed to park. In this technology, we have avoided the turning of cars. All cars are parked in racks on one over the other in 3 layers. Thus, 4 cars are parked in place of one –a most economical car parking system which can be housed in basement and rooftop of building.

Patent 7: Advanced Water Feeding System for Boiler Vessels

This design replaces multi-stage pumps with a single-stage pump, using gravitational force to feed water—reducing electrical consumption and maintenance costs.  This device replaces multi stage boiler feed water pump with single stage pump. Thus, huge saving in power consumption & maintenance. Here, we are using gravitational force to feed the water in the boiler under pressure.

Noble Cause Innovation: Energy-Efficient Human Cremation Device

Dr. Cheema developed a compassionate technology that uses heated air for efficient wood combustion. The system reduces wood use by 50% and completes the cremation cycle in 2–3 hours, compared to the traditional 48-hour process.

Bridging Industry and Academia

Beyond running a major engineering company, Dr. Cheema is deeply committed to fostering India’s innovation ecosystem. He serves on advisory boards, senates, and academic councils of leading institutions, including:
• IIT Ropar – Professor of Practice and Senate Member
• IIM Kashipur (FIED) – Advisor
• Chandigarh University & Chandigarh Group of Colleges – Advisor
• LPU Jalandhar – Advisor
• Shoolini University & Beant University – Adjunct Faculty
• Eternal University, Baru Sahib & Baba Farid Group of Institutions – Academic Council Member
His academic involvement reflects a conviction that India’s technological leap will come from strong industry-academia partnerships.
