The Pharmacology Laboratory of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing three prestigious ISO certifications from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). These include IS/ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management, IS/ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management, and IS/ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
Triple ISO certification marks a new era of excellence
The certifications were awarded during a BIS-organized event on Quality Management System certification for officials of the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH), New Delhi. This recognition positions AIIA’s Pharmacology Laboratory and Small Animal House Facility in line with globally accepted benchmarks of quality, environmental stewardship, and occupational safety.
Through the introduction of an Integrated Management System (IMS), AIIA has standardized laboratory protocols, reinforced adherence to ethical and environmental norms, and enhanced operational efficiency in pre-clinical pharmacological studies on Ayurvedic formulations.
Key outcomes of the ISO certification
- Implementation of reproducible and streamlined experimental methods under the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Adoption of environmentally responsible operations, including waste reduction and energy efficiency through the Environmental Management System (EMS).
- Strengthened occupational health and safety measures under the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), featuring risk assessment, ergonomic design, and periodic safety reviews.
Recognition by BIS enhances national and international credibility
The BIS audit process, conducted in two stages, offered valuable insights to adapt ISO standards for pharmacological and animal research contexts. This achievement enhances AIIA’s reputation as a national and global centre of excellence in Ayurvedic research and innovation.
Prof. (Vaidya) P. K. Prajapati, Director of AIIA, expressed pride in the achievement, noting that integrating global ISO benchmarks with traditional Ayurvedic research underscores the institute’s commitment to quality, safety, and sustainability. He added that the initiative sets a model for Ayurveda institutions across India to align with international best practices while preserving ancient traditions.
Leaders emphasize quality and continuous improvement
Mrs. Lalthan Pari, Scientist E at BIS, highlighted the importance of prioritizing Quality Management Systems across organizations to elevate overall standards. Dr. Subhash Kaushik, Director General of CCRH, emphasized that quality, commitment, and continuous improvement are essential to maintaining systematic progress. Former BIS Scientist-F, Dr. R. K. Kain, was also present during the ceremony.
AIIA: advancing Ayurveda with modern research methods
The All India Institute of Ayurveda, accredited with NAAC A++ and recognized as the first NABH-accredited public sector Ayurveda hospital in India, operates a 200-bed referral hospital with 12 specialty departments and 45 specialty clinics. The institute blends classical Ayurvedic wisdom with scientific research to advance evidence-based healthcare.
The triple ISO certification achievement reinforces AIIA’s vision to promote global standards, ethical research, and sustainable practices within the Ayurveda sector. Additional Professor Dr. Galib, Dr. Bidhan, and Dr. Vijay Kumar represented AIIA during the certification event.
