Cabinet Approves Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2 for Line 4 and Line 4A
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has approved Line 4 from Kharadi to Khadakwasla and Line 4A from Nal Stop to Warje–Manik Baug under Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. This approval follows the earlier sanction of Line 2A from Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Line 2B from Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi.
Project Scope and Funding
Lines 4 and 4A will span a total length of 31.636 km and include 28 elevated stations. The corridors will link IT parks, commercial areas, educational zones, and residential regions across East, South, and West Pune. The project is estimated to cost Rs.9,857.85 crore and is scheduled for completion within five years. Funding will be shared by the Government of India, the Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral or multilateral agencies.
Integration and Connectivity
The corridors form an integral component of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan and will connect with existing and approved metro lines at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop on Line 2, and Swargate on Line 1. An interchange facility at Hadapsar Railway Station will be included, and the lines will link with proposed routes toward Loni Kalbhor and Saswad Road. This connectivity aims to support smooth movement across metro, rail, and bus systems.
Corridor Coverage
Line 4 and Line 4A will connect areas ranging from Kharadi IT Park to Khadakwasla and from Hadapsar’s industrial stretches to residential localities in Warje. The alignment will pass through Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, with the objective of easing traffic load on key routes and supporting safer and more efficient travel.
Ridership Estimates
Projections indicate a combined estimated daily ridership of 4.09 lakh passengers on Lines 4 and 4A in 2028. This number is expected to grow to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and over 11.7 lakh in 2058. For the Kharadi–Khadakwasla section, passenger numbers are projected at 3.23 lakh in 2028, rising to 9.33 lakh in 2058. The Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug spur line is expected to increase from 85,555 passengers to 2.41 lakh within the same timeframe.
Implementation Progress
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will oversee civil, electrical, mechanical, and systems-related work for the project. Pre-construction activities, including topographical surveys and detailed design work, are in progress. With this approval, the Pune Metro network is set to expand beyond the 100 km mark, indicating further growth of the city’s urban transport infrastructure.
