Operation Fire Trail Uncovers Illegal Shipment
In a significant crackdown on illegal imports ahead of Deepawali, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) successfully executed Operation Fire Trail, intercepting two forty-foot containers at Tuticorin Port. The containers, falsely declared as containing engineering goods, were found to hold 83,520 pieces of Chinese firecrackers valued at ₹5.01 crore. Alongside the contraband, authorities seized cover cargo consisting of silicon sealant guns.
Coordinated Action and Arrests
Between October 14 and 18, 2025, DRI officers conducted meticulous operations, leading to the apprehension of the importer at Tuticorin. Further investigation resulted in the arrest of three additional individuals, including two from Mumbai, in Chennai and Tuticorin. All four suspects, implicated in a coordinated smuggling effort, have been remanded to judicial custody.
Legal and Safety Violations
The importation of firecrackers is strictly regulated under the ITC (HS) Classification of the Foreign Trade Policy, requiring licenses from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) as per the Explosive Rules, 2008. The mis-declaration and illegal importation of these firecrackers not only contravene foreign trade and safety regulations but also pose significant risks to public safety and port infrastructure due to their highly combustible nature.
DRI’s Commitment to National Security
The DRI remains steadfast in its mission to combat smuggling, protect national infrastructure, and ensure public safety. Operations like Fire Trail underscore the agency’s proactive efforts to curb illegal activities that threaten India’s safety and economic integrity.
