Better Support Systems Now in Place

The level of care available for children and young people with high support needs has seen a boost, thanks to increased investment. Over the past year, Oranga Tamariki facilitated an additional 59 placements across 11 accredited community care partners.

According to Minister for Children, Karen Chhour, this assistance is vital for families and caregivers who support these young individuals living with disabilities or complex needs. The enhancements to care services mean more tailored assistance is now readily accessible for these young people.

Everyday Routines Better Managed

These care programmes cover a broad spectrum of daily needs including eating habits, sleep schedules, and communication support. Assistance is also provided to help children attend school, maintain friendships, and participate in social or sporting activities.

Additionally, specialised care tools like visual aids, communication devices, and social stories are used to support independence and emotional wellbeing. These tools support stress management and help young people understand and manage daily challenges.

Investment from Budget 2024 a Key Factor

A critical element in this enhanced level of care is the allocation of $99.784 million under Budget 2024. This funding is spread across a four-year period and is entirely dedicated to programmes for high support needs youth, including those with disabilities.

Minister Chhour expressed that this investment reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that vulnerable young people and their families receive timely and appropriate assistance. She confirmed that this initiative is central to improving long-term outcomes.

This increase in placements and services underscores an ongoing effort to provide structured and compassionate care to some of the most at-risk young individuals in society.
