India-New Zealand Trade Partnership Gains Momentum

The first official visit by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal, along with a 43-member Indian trade delegation, has strengthened trade discussions and business relations between India and New Zealand, according to Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay.

Largest Indian Delegation Visits New Zealand

Minister Goyal led the largest delegation from India to visit New Zealand, comprising business leaders and media representatives. The visit featured a series of high-level business meetings, engagement with the New Zealand Indian community, and continued discussions with Minister McClay to advance negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) between the two nations.

Boosting Trade and Partnerships

“Hosting Minister Goyal provided an opportunity to showcase both the quality of New Zealand’s export offerings and the successful business partnerships already flourishing between our two countries,” stated Mr. McClay. He added that a potential FTA would accelerate the development of new partnerships and provide benefits to both countries.

The discussions held in Rotorua were described as constructive, with significant progress made in several areas. The focus remains on achieving a balanced, comprehensive, and ambitious FTA that enhances trade relations and delivers tangible benefits for both nations.

Strengthening Ties Over Time

Developing the relationship with India has been a priority for the New Zealand Government, resulting in an unprecedented level of engagement over the past two years. Minister Goyal’s visit follows Indian President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to New Zealand last year, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s trade mission to India earlier this year with the largest business delegation ever, and multiple visits by Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Minister McClay.

Next Steps for the FTA

Minister McClay will travel to India at the end of next week to continue discussions. “Both sides are committed to moving at pace, without compromising on a high-quality outcome,” he said.

Once concluded, the FTA could unlock access to India’s dynamic and rapidly growing economy, offering more options for New Zealand exporters amid global trade uncertainties.
