Long-overdue repairs to boost rail reliability in NZ cities

Commuters in Auckland and Wellington can soon expect more dependable rail services as the New Zealand government confirms new funding for critical maintenance across both metro networks. Transport Minister Chris Bishop detailed the plans as part of efforts to rectify long-standing neglect and frequent disruptions.

Wellington to receive biggest share

The Wellington metro rail system will receive $94.2 million, the larger portion of the total $143.6 million allocated in Budget 2025. This amount will support essential restoration works including rail and sleeper replacements, and upgrades to key track infrastructure such as turnouts used for routing trains across multiple tracks. Significant attention is also being given to drainage systems, bridge refurbishments, culverts, and slope stabilisation, particularly along the Hutt Valley and Kapiti lines.

Upgrades geared toward Auckland’s City Rail Link launch

Auckland’s metro network will receive $49.4 million to support overdue enhancements designed to ready the system for the City Rail Link (CRL) opening in 2026. The planned works involve replacing several old turnouts, specifically on the Southern and Western Lines, along with significant track foundation improvements in the Parnell Tunnel. The program also includes upgrades to drainage, rail and sleeper replacements, and slope protections across the city.

Part of a wider investment strategy

This financial commitment builds on the groundwork laid in last year’s Budget, which granted $48.8 million towards Auckland renewals and $52.9 million for critical work in Wellington. An additional $159 million was also previously invested to facilitate Auckland’s wider Rail Network Rebuild. With work already underway and intensifying as summer approaches, the government’s objective is to deliver smoother, more frequent, and more dependable train services to thousands of daily commuters.

The Transport Minister highlighted that reliable public transport is essential for easing congestion and improving daily travel. The renewed focus on metro rail marks an important step in strengthening urban transport infrastructure in both major cities.
