New Mining Milestone in Central Otago

New Zealand is poised for a significant upswing in its resources sector as the government issues a long-term mining permit for a major gold reserve. The Rise and Shine prospect in the Dunstan Mountains, part of the Bendigo-Ophir Gold Project, has received a 30-year mining permit, marking one of the most substantial gold finds in recent decades.

Job Creation and Economic Impact

The Matakanui Gold Limited-led operation is expected to directly recruit 357 staff each year, while indirectly supporting another 500 roles. These positions will be geared towards local talent, with average annual earnings projected at about $140,300, doubling the current Central Otago average.

Beyond employment, the project is set to significantly enhance public revenue. Estimates suggest that royalties paid to the Crown within 14 years could amount to several hundred million dollars. Additionally, the company aims to contribute nearly $800 million in taxes, funding national necessities including healthcare, education and infrastructure.

Preparing the Next Generation of Miners

A mix of opencast mining in the initial stages and underground extraction over time is planned, providing training opportunities for upcoming mining professionals. This move supports the sector’s long-term growth, aiding new ventures in the coming decades.

Fast-Track Status and Ongoing Investments

The Bendigo-Ophir project has been designated under Schedule 2 of the 2024 Fast-Track Approvals Act, ensuring a faster permit process for remaining consents. The government views this recognition as a sign of the country’s rich, untapped mineral reserves, including regions believed to be exhausted by past mining.

West Coast Project Receives Major Funding

Meanwhile, Endura Mining (previously Federation Mining) has raised close to NZ$172 million to advance the Snowy River Gold Mine near Reefton. The government had earlier supported the project with a $15 million loan in 2019. The latest investment round has attracted backing from AustralianSuper and Orion Resource Partners, indicating renewed global confidence in New Zealand’s mining landscape.

The government continues to highlight the value of responsibly utilising the country’s underground resources to drive regional development, create skilled jobs, enhance export revenue and ensure long-term economic strength.

About the Mining Sector’s Future

The growth in mining activity marks a pivotal moment for New Zealand’s resource strategy, aiming to unlock national wealth while remaining focused on skill development and regional opportunities. With steady international interest and strong government support, the sector is emerging as a backbone for future prosperity.
