South Africa Embraces New Collaborative Model for Venice Biennale

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC) has confirmed South Africa’s participation in the 61st International Art Exhibition, set to be hosted by the Venice Biennale from May to November 2026 in Italy. For the first time, the country’s pavilion will be managed entirely by a non-governmental entity.

Art Periodic South Africa, a registered non-profit organisation, has taken up the responsibility of fundraising, coordinating, and presenting the national Pavilion. The organisation approached DSAC with an unsolicited proposal, which was approved following careful review.

A Sector-Driven Approach to Global Cultural Representation

The shift signifies a substantial change in governance, moving away from a solely government-directed process to a collaborative structure involving experts from across sectors. This new model aims to broaden participation, promote transparency, and ensure equal representation of artists and institutions.

DSAC will continue its support through the provision of South Africa’s official exhibition space at the Arsenale. Additionally, the South African Ambassador to Italy will serve as the Commissioner of the Pavilion, adding diplomatic backing to the initiative.

Advisory Committee to Guide the Pavilion’s Vision

To ensure the Pavilion embodies South Africa’s artistic depth and cultural diversity, Art Periodic South Africa is assembling a national Advisory Committee. The panel will comprise leaders from the arts, business, and civic communities, offering expertise on long-term strategy, partnerships, and artist selection.

Open Call for Exhibition Proposals and Collaborations

Aligned with the overarching theme of the Biennale, curated by the late Koyo Kouoh and titled “In Minor Keys”, the South African Pavilion will explore themes of resilience, care, and underrepresented cultural narratives. In line with this vision, Art Periodic will soon issue a nationwide open call inviting submissions from curators and artists.

Proposals will be judged on artistic strength, conceptual clarity, feasibility, and their reflection of South Africa’s broader cultural landscape. DSAC is encouraging wide participation from across the country’s creative sectors.

A separate invitation will also be extended to institutions and individuals interested in supporting or partnering on the Pavilion project, further strengthening its national character.

Conclusion

South Africa’s evolving approach to global cultural representation signals a renewed commitment to inclusive and innovative arts leadership. With strong institutional support and a sector-led model, the country’s presence at the 2026 Venice Biennale is poised to showcase the vitality and richness of its contemporary art scene on the world stage.
