New Identity Requirements Set to Transform UK Business Transparency
Starting 18 November 2025, the landscape of corporate governance in the UK will undergo a significant shift. Companies House is bringing in a new requirement for all company directors and individuals with significant control (PSC) to verify their identity through an official process. This aims to boost public trust by ensuring that the data on the nation’s company register reflects genuine individuals behind every business operation.
Over a Million Already Compliant via Voluntary Verification
The identity verification service was rolled out in April 2025 on a voluntary basis and has already seen strong engagement. Over 1 million people have willingly completed the verification process, marking an encouraging response ahead of it becoming compulsory. According to Companies House’s Chief Executive, Andy King, this milestone is just the beginning of a much broader transformation.
“A Trusted Business Register is Vital”
Commenting on the progress, Andy King stressed the importance of accurate and verified company ownership details. He highlighted that the new system will help eliminate misuse of company information and better support efforts to prevent economic crime. Transparency and security, he noted, are central to ensuring that the register remains a reliable source of business intelligence.
Verification Process: Quick, Secure, and User-Friendly
Companies House has introduced a streamlined identity verification system that can be completed in minutes. Individuals can verify directly via GOV.UK One Login or through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP). Once verified, a personal code is issued, which must be used for each company role held.
Important Deadlines and Access to Information
From 18 November, companies will receive direct communication explaining the specific deadlines for each director or PSC associated with their business. Additionally, registered individuals will be able to view their verification status and due dates through the Companies House register online. This initiative strengthens accountability across the corporate ecosystem and further supports data integrity in the UK’s business environment.
