£389k funding boost to strengthen North Wales’ green economy
Nuclear Restoration Services has committed £389,000 to further enhance the low carbon ecosystem in North Wales. The funding will support the Egni team at Menai Science Park (M-SParc) on Anglesey, building on previous investments that have already generated notable impacts in the region.
Building on prior success
This marks the final phase of a three-year socio-economic partnership that began in 2021. In the initial phase, £360,000 from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) helped set up a dedicated low carbon team under Egni. Since then, the initiative has delivered over 5,000 hours of business support and facilitated upwards of £7 million in external investment. Thousands of schoolchildren have also been engaged in STEM-related learning through the programme.
Announcement at Wales Climate Week
The latest funding announcement was shared by NDA Director of Socio-economics, Jamie Reed, during the annual Egni Conference at M-SParc, timed with Wales Climate Week 2025. Reed emphasised the significance of the Egni initiative in driving a cleaner and more resilient regional economy.
New phase, fresh goals
With the upcoming phase titled “Powering Impact from the Energy Sector,” Egni plans to widen its support for local firms and encourage more innovation in sustainable practices. Dr Debbie Jones, the Low Carbon Innovation Manager at M-SParc, highlighted the vision to establish a second self-sustaining building under the Egni name, which could serve as a long-term hub for low carbon technology and business growth beyond 2027.
A legacy of investment in the region
Over the years, the NDA and NRS have channelled close to £16 million into socio-economic projects across Anglesey and Gwynedd. This long-term investment has nurtured several hundred green businesses and created thousands of job opportunities, significantly contributing to sustainable growth in North Wales.
