Des Moines, November 12, 2025: Governor Kim Reynolds has directed that all flags in Iowa remain at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, November 13, 2025, as a mark of respect and remembrance for former Iowa State Senator and Iowa Board of Regents member, Larry McKibben.
Tribute to Larry McKibben’s Public Service
Born in Marshalltown, Larry McKibben dedicated many years of service to the state of Iowa. He represented his constituency in the Iowa Senate from 1997 until 2010. Later, in 2013, he was appointed to the Iowa Board of Regents, where he served until 2019. McKibben passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2025, due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease.
Governor Reynolds’ Statement
Governor Reynolds expressed her deep condolences to McKibben’s family and paid tribute to his contributions to the state. In her statement, she said:
“Larry McKibben was a kind and good man and was loved by all who knew him. I had the privilege of working briefly alongside Larry in the Iowa State Senate and later got to know him well while he served on the Board of Regents. Kevin and I offer our condolences and prayers to his family during this time. He will be deeply missed.”
Flags to Remain at Half-Staff for Two Tributes
Flags on the State Capitol Building, across the Capitol Complex, and on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout Iowa are currently being flown at half-staff in memory of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who passed away on November 3, 2025. The flags will continue to remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of his interment, which is scheduled for November 20, 2025.
Public Participation Encouraged
Governor Reynolds encouraged individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions to join in this gesture of respect by keeping their flags at half-staff for the same period. This unified display across the state honors both former Senator Larry McKibben’s legacy and the memory of former Vice President Dick Cheney.
