The Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika National Awards were presented today in Guwahati, recognising cultural excellence across Northeast India. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia conferred the awards at a ceremony organised by Sarhad Pune, acknowledging the region’s vibrant artistic and intellectual contributions.
Six distinguished figures were honoured for their outstanding work across diverse fields. The awardees include writer Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi from Arunachal Pradesh, Manipuri theatre artist Laishram Mema, Assamese filmmaker Rajni Basumatary, Mizoram’s journalist L. R. Sailo, cultural scholar Dr. Surjya Kanta Hazarika from Assam, and historian Prof. David R. Syiemlieh from Meghalaya.
Scindia Reflects on Bhupen Da’s Legacy
Addressing the gathering, Scindia paid homage to Bhupen Hazarika’s artistic and social influence, noting his unparalleled ability to use music as a bridge between diverse communities. The Minister shared a personal connection with the Northeast, recalling his family’s role in Assam’s recovery after the 1950 earthquake through the Assam Relief Fund founded by his grandfather Maharaja Jivajirao Scindia.
He praised the Bhupen Hazarika Setu, describing it as an enduring symbol of connection and progress inspired by the maestro’s vision. Scindia also commended the long-standing efforts of Sarhad Pune and its founder Sanjay Nahar in promoting national unity and cultural preservation.
Nanhi Chhaan Essay Contest Highlights Youth Vision
Following the award ceremony, Scindia interacted with young winners of the 12th Nanhi Chhaan National Essay Contest. The competition saw participation from over 50,000 students across India, each expressing their thoughts on the theme “The Force of Viksit Bharat.”
Scindia commended their clarity and patriotic spirit, highlighting that a truly developed India will emerge when women and youth lead the way with empathy, innovation, and resolve. He drew inspiration from the courage of Kanaklata Barua, an Assamese freedom fighter, and emphasized the role of women in nation building.

The Minister underlined the transformative role of daughters in building a future-ready nation. He stated that India’s march towards becoming a Viksit Bharat will accelerate when women’s resilience meets youth innovation, fostering an inclusive and forward-looking society.
