Keynote Addresses: Vision for Science Outreach
Dr. Geetha Vani Rayasam, Director of CSIR-NIScPR, opened the workshop by emphasizing the importance of informing students and stakeholders about India’s diverse scientific research, particularly from remote regions like Palampur. Shri C. B. Singh, Chief Scientist & Head of the Popular Science Division at CSIR-NIScPR, highlighted the workshop’s goal of fostering a collaborative science community through various programs.
Shri Balendu Dadhich, Director at Microsoft India, stressed the need to democratize science communication by combating misinformation, ensuring fact-checked content, and adapting to the challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
Two-Way Communication: From Labs to the Public
Dr. Manoj Kumar Patairiya, Former Head & Adviser at NCSTC, DST, Delhi, addressed the confusion caused by conflicting COVID-19 research and called for an “army of communicators” to deliver verified scientific information to the public. He emphasized a continuous flow of knowledge between labs and communities, stating, “There should be a continuous flow of knowledge both from the land to the labs and from the labs back to the land.”
Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director of CSIR-IHBT, Palampur, underscored the role of empathy in science communication, noting, “Scientific understanding combined with empathy and feelings represents the true spirit of science.”
Chief Guest Insights: Cultivating Scientific Temper
Prof. K. G. Suresh, Director of India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, served as the chief guest and highlighted the importance of integrating science communication into all aspects of governance, not just science and technology departments. Drawing lessons from the polio campaign, he noted the critical role of local influencers and medical practitioners in dispelling myths and boosting vaccine acceptance. Prof. Suresh advocated for inclusive communication strategies to maximize societal benefits.
Brainstorming Sessions: Diverse Perspectives on Science Popularization
The workshop featured brainstorming sessions on science popularization, the evolving role of media, women’s participation in science communication, and outreach to marginalized communities. Notable speakers included Dr. Chandra Mohan Nautiyal, Shri Hasan Jawaid Khan, Dr. Suman Ray, and Dr. Manish Mohan Gore, who shared insights on engaging diverse audiences.
Innovative Formats for Science Communication
Day one sessions explored the role of scientists in communication and the importance of accurate scientific information. Discussions covered diverse formats such as social media, science fiction, poetry, and electronic media to make science accessible to all.

On the second day, the workshop hosted a student-scientist connect program focused on popular science writing, alongside participant presentations. These sessions aimed to inspire young minds and equip them with tools to communicate science effectively.
