In a significant step towards sustainable growth in the North-East, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh held a detailed discussion with Mizoram Governor General (Retd.) V K Singh at Raj Bhavan. The meeting focused on bringing innovative agricultural models and strengthening regional stability through development-driven initiatives.

A New Chapter for Mizoram’s Highlands
The centerpiece of the conversation was the plan to introduce lavender farming under the national Aroma Mission in Mizoram’s higher altitudes. This program, which first gained traction in Jammu and Kashmir, has already transformed rural economies in several Himalayan states by creating steady income sources for local farmers.
Governor V K Singh praised the central government’s decade-long efforts in restoring calm and accelerating progress across the North-East. He pointed out that the region now enjoys better connectivity, increased investment, and a sharp drop in insurgency-related incidents compared to previous years.
He specifically highlighted the success of lavender projects in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, expressing confidence that similar results could be achieved in Mizoram’s cooler hill zones.

How Lavender Farming Changes Lives
Lavender cultivation offers more than just scenic purple fields. It provides a high-value cash crop that requires low water and minimal chemical inputs, making it ideal for ecologically sensitive areas. Farmers can sell fresh flowers, dried buds, or distilled essential oil, opening multiple revenue streams.
Each hectare can support small-scale processing units, encouraging women-led cooperatives and youth startups. The model has already created thousands of direct and indirect jobs in other states, with many farmers reporting income increases of 3-5 times compared to traditional crops.
Dr. Singh assured full technical support from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). A dedicated task force will soon visit potential sites, conduct soil testing, and train the first batch of growers. Seedlings, distillation equipment, and market linkages will be provided under the mission’s existing framework.
Leadership That Shows Up
During the interaction, Dr. Singh recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made close to 60 trips to the North-East since 2014. This figure surpasses the combined visits of all earlier Prime Ministers, underlining a clear priority shift in national policy.
These frequent engagements have translated into landmark projects: new airports, medical colleges, rail lines, and broadband networks now dot the region. Peace accords with multiple groups have further cleared the path for economic activity.

Why Mizoram is Ready for This Leap
Mizoram’s climate in districts like Champhai, Saitual, and parts of Aizawl offers the cool temperatures and well-drained soils that lavender prefers. Local farming communities already practice terrace cultivation and organic methods, giving them a head start.
State horticulture officials estimate that even a modest 500-hectare pilot could generate over 2,000 seasonal jobs and attract tourism-focused homestays. Tie-ups with perfume and wellness brands are also in the pipeline to ensure stable off-take.
Beyond economics, the project aligns with broader goals of environmental conservation. Lavender acts as a natural pest repellent, reducing the need for synthetic pesticides in surrounding fields. Its deep roots help prevent soil erosion on slopes, a common concern in hilly terrain.
Looking Ahead: A Fragrant Future
The proposed rollout will begin with awareness camps in January 2026, followed by nursery development and field trials. Successful clusters will receive certification for organic produce, commanding premium prices in domestic and export markets.
As Mizoram prepares to join the lavender revolution, the initiative sends a larger message: peace and prosperity go hand in hand. When local youth see viable opportunities at home, the pull of urban migration weakens, and community bonds grow stronger.
This meeting at Raj Bhavan marks more than policy talk; it signals a practical roadmap for inclusive growth. From purple fields to peaceful villages, Mizoram is set to script a success story that other North-Eastern states will watch closely.
