The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, delivered a special address to the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly in Dehradun on the Silver Jubilee of the state’s formation. In her speech, she highlighted the critical role legislative assemblies play in India’s parliamentary democracy.

She recalled Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s emphasis on consistent public accountability within the parliamentary system. According to her, it is this constant dialogue with citizens that strengthens democracy.

Legislators as a Vital Link Between People and Government

President Murmu described Members of the Legislative Assembly as a vital link between the government and the people. She stated that connecting with constituents and addressing their needs at the grassroots level are some of the greatest privileges of public life.

She urged the legislators to work tirelessly for public welfare, set aside political differences, and prioritise the needs of the most disadvantaged communities. Creating opportunities for the youth, she said, must remain a core objective of development.

The President lauded the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code Bill in Uttarakhand, calling it a significant step in fulfilling a Constitutional vision under Article 44. She also applauded the Assembly’s record of passing over 550 bills, several of which focus on transparency, justice, and social welfare.

Uttarakhand’s Development Journey
