ICAR Sikkim Boosts Farmers’ Livelihoods in Sadam Village

Farmers-Scientist Interaction Enhances Rural Agriculture

On October 24, 2025, the ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Tadong, hosted a Farmers–Scientist Interaction-cum-Field Visit in Sadam village, South Sikkim. Organized under the NEH Component, the event aimed to improve rural livelihoods through scientific advancements in agriculture and allied sectors. The program fostered direct dialogue between farmers and scientists, bridging the gap between research and practical application.

Empowering Farmers with Knowledge and Resources

Sharing Experiences and Solutions

During the event, farmers shared their field-level experiences, challenges, and success stories. In response, scientists provided technical guidance on improved crop management, soil health enhancement, and integrated farming systems tailored to Sikkim’s hilly terrain. The interaction emphasized location-specific and climate-resilient technologies to promote sustainable agriculture.

Leadership and Vision

Dr. Ashok Kumar, Head of ICAR Sikkim Centre, led the field visit alongside Dr. Amit Kumar, Scientist (Agronomy). Dr. Ashok Kumar stressed the importance of adopting organic-based technologies and integrating crop, horticulture, and livestock components to enhance farm resilience and livelihoods. He praised the farmers’ enthusiasm for adopting ICAR-recommended technologies and pledged ongoing support through on-farm trials, demonstrations, and training programs.

Distributing Agricultural Inputs

The event included the distribution of critical agricultural inputs to support diversified cropping. Farmers received winter vegetable seeds, oilseed crop seeds, and quality potato seed tubers. These resources aim to boost household nutrition and income, aligning with ICAR’s mission to enhance rural prosperity.

Community Engagement and Future Plans

The program saw participation from 25 local farmers, village representatives, and ICAR scientists. It concluded with an open discussion where farmers provided feedback and suggestions for future interventions. This dialogue underscored ICAR’s commitment to strengthening the research–extension–farmer interface and advancing sustainable agricultural growth in the Himalayan region.
