The Indian Navy successfully organized a high-level seminar titled Impact of Cyber Attacks on Maritime Sector and Its Effects on National Security and International Relations at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan today. The event focused on deepening insights into cyber threats in the maritime domain while promoting collaboration among stakeholders to bolster India’s cybersecurity framework.

Chief Guest’s Keynote and Welcome Address

Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), extended a warm welcome to the Chief Guest, Shri Jitin Prasada, Hon’ble Minister of State for the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and Commerce & Industry. In his keynote address, Shri Prasada underscored the escalating role of cybersecurity in protecting the maritime sector. He emphasized the collective responsibility to develop a robust, resilient, and proactive maritime cyber defense architecture.

In his remarks, CNS highlighted the government’s strategic emphasis on the maritime domain as a cornerstone of India’s economic prosperity and national security. Aligning with the ‘Samudra se Samriddhi’ vision, initiatives such as Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, Sagarmala, and PM Gati Shakti are driving maritime advancement. He stressed the imperative to integrate cybersecurity from the design phase of maritime systems and enhance inter-stakeholder coordination for swift information exchange.

Insightful Panel Discussions

The seminar featured three expert-led panel discussions, moderated by distinguished leaders from pivotal ministries and organizations. Participants included representatives from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways; Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG); National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS); Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL); Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH); Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In); National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC); National Maritime Foundation (NMF); and private sector innovators.

The panels delved into critical themes:

  • Global Cyber Threats to Maritime Infrastructure
  • Civil-Military Partnerships in Cybersecurity
  • Positioning the Maritime Sector as Critical Information Infrastructure (CII)

Discussions highlighted the rising criticality of cybersecurity in maritime operations and advocated for designating the sector as an independent CII to enable targeted protections.

Tech Exhibition Promoting Indigenous Innovation

Complementing the seminar, a technology exhibition was held in collaboration with the Data Security Council of India (DSCI). It showcased cutting-edge indigenous cybersecurity and defense technologies from startups nationwide, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Key Outcomes and Commitments

The event yielded vital insights, including the pinpointing of vulnerabilities in the maritime digital ecosystem and the development of targeted mitigation strategies. These efforts aim to fortify overall cybersecurity resilience in the sector.
